Andrea Febrero, former EAE student, explains her experience at the OCU providing support to the HR Department

We would like to introduce you to Andrea Febrero, a former student on EAE Business School’s Master in HR Management. Andrea tells us about her experience and duties at the OCU, in an interesting interview.

WHAT COMPANY ARE YOU DOING WORK EXPERIENCE IN?

I am on a placement in the Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU – Consumer and User Organization).

WHAT DUTIES DO YOU HAVE AT THE OCU?

I am working in the HR Department performing support tasks for selection, training and internal communication mainly.

DO YOU OFTEN DO INTERVIEWS IN THE SELECTION PROCESSES?

As yet, I haven’t interviewed any candidates on my own. I often attend interviews and provide support to my colleagues and ask a few questions. My main duties are publishing employment offers and filtering curriculums.

WHEN YOU SAY THAT YOU PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR TRAINING, WHAT DO YOU MEAN EXACTLY? DO YOU ORGANIZE THE TRAINING REQUIRED BY EACH EMPLOYEE?

In the case of new recruits, there are induction plans in place. I am responsible for preparing and updating the necessary documentation for these plans.

In addition, it is very important to innovate with respect to training courses for employees, both internally and externally. If some of the employees know a lot about a certain topic, they prepare and give training presentations on the subject, both at the OCU and in external companies.

WHAT TYPE OF INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS DO YOU UNDERTAKE?

Our internal communication is based on updating the intranet and notice board, where the most important press releases about the OCU and its departments are posted, so that employees and partners can keep up to date with the activities carried out.

DID YOU RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF PRIOR TRAINING ABOUT THE COMPANY?

Yes, I received training beforehand.

IS IT THE SAME TYPE OF TRAINING THAT YOU NOW HELP TO PROVIDE?

Yes. I spent a week learning about the company culture, getting to know the employees and departments, and the key people that I would be dealing with. All of this falls within the scope of the induction plans. In addition, a photocall picture is posted on the intranet so that all of the employees from the various departments get to know the new member of the OCU.

DO YOU WORK IN A TEAM OR INDIVIDUALLY?

There are jobs that I do individually and others in a team. It depends on the needs of the task at hand. All of the tasks have the support of all of the colleagues in the department, although I perform several tasks with a certain degree of autonomy.

DO YOU HAVE A COMMON KITCHEN OR COMMON DINING ROOM IN THE OFFICE?

Yes, there is a large dining room, which is just a place with tables where the employees can eat food they have brought from home. We also have the option of going out to eat at one of the nearby bars.

There are a lot of vending machines with food and drinks. Each employee has a card with an allowance of just over a euro every day to use on the machines.

DO YOU TEND TO EAT OR GO FOR COFFEE TOGETHER?

There is a very good working environment in the company. As a result, there is a nice dynamic of chatting about important topics and sharing opinions during the coffee break. Mid-morning, we go for a coffee in the food and drink area, and discuss the company news on the notice boards.

WHICH IS YOU FAVOURITE SPOT IN THE OFFICE AND WHY?

My favourite spot is the photocall that we have in the office to announce new arrivals on the intranet. I love this place because of the enthusiasm and excitement shown by the people who come through here.

LASTLY, OUT OF CURIOSITY, IS THERE A DRESS CODE FOR WORK?

There are no rigid demands. The important thing is that we all turn up clean and tidy and eager to get on with our work.
