Rafael Torguet: “A good level of process maturity can improve the quality of a company”

Rafael Torguet, the current IT Project Manager for EMEA online and eCommerce Business at HP, has given us some insight into his impressions of the conference on management organized at EAE Business School in Barcelona. More specifically, he gave the attendees a presentation of the results of the model that he developed in his previous company, GTD, regarding process maturity.

Rafael Torguet- WHAT WAS THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE CONFERENCE?

Primarily, the aim was to present the context and challenges faced during the implementation Programme and certification process for the Organizational Processes based on the CMMI model (Capability Maturity Model Integration). The conference focused on the case of GTD Information Systems and concentrated on Project Management processes.

- WHAT IS INVOLVED IN HAVING GOOD MANAGEMENT PROCESSES WITHIN A COMPANY?

The project management processes in a business organization categorize their good practices into different business or industrial groups. They also set out what is necessary for planning, executing, supervising, controlling and closing an individual project.

Good management is achieved through the execution of processes. Doing so requires a good use of knowledge, skills, tools and management techniques. Therefore, if an organization has good processes and knows how to select the appropriate ones to achieve its objectives, the likelihood of this project’s success increases.

- WHAT ASPECTS OF THE MODEL THAT YOU DEVELOPED AT GTD REGARDING PROCESS MATURITY CAN BE OPTIMIZED?

The statistical experience of CMMI implementation (SEI data) shows that organizations that improve their process maturity obtain a series of benefits in a range of aspects. It improves the accuracy and foresight of budgets. It increases the duration of a project cycle, productivity and the return of investment (ROI). In the same way, it increases the likelihood of good corporate morale among the employees and enhances customer satisfaction. In general, it improves the quality of the product.

- HOW WOULD YOU RATE THE PARTICIPATION OF THE ATTENDEES?

Bearing in mind that the conference was held at the same time as a Champions League match, the participation was reasonably good. Moreover, I found that interesting questions were put forward by a group of students.

- AS A BUSINESS SCHOOL, WHAT DOES EAE CONTRIBUTE TO ITS STUDENTS IN PRACTICAL TERMS?

Above all, knowledge of different Business Areas, and a great network of contacts. In addition, the series of conferences given by experts based on case studies and professional experiences always provide an applied vision of this knowledge.
