On this occasion the students from EAE's Madrid Campus had the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the ABC Museum of Drawing and Illustration, in a building that used to be the capital's first factory of Mahou beer, much to the participants' surprise.
Ailén Durán de Bolivia, a student on the Master in Supply Chain Management, did not hesitate take some time out to come on the tour. Ailén explained that "this type of extracurricular activity helps me to clear my head after the intensive program at EAE. I am always keen to take part in other activities, beyond the academic side of things".
Located right in the centre of Madrid, the ABC Museum covers an area of 3,800 m2, where it conducts its activities, over six floors and various functional spaces. The museum currently belongs to the Fundación Colección ABC and it contains around 200,000 original illustrations published in the magazine Blanco y Negro that used to accompany the newspaper ABC.
These were among the reasons that convinced Carlos David Mariscal to attend. "I want to get to know the cultural side of Spain, because I would like to share it with my fellow Latin Americans, as I am from Ecuador". Carlos David is taking the Master in Marketing and Commercial Management.
Accompanied by the museum guide, the group of EAE students del EAE had the chance to look around the whole building and see its current exhibitions: "Pintacuentos" a display of contemporary Mexican illustration for children, and "Three illusions". Ecuadorian student Sofía Dávila took the Master in Financial Management in the graduating class of 2017 but she is still in contact with EAE. "I have really enjoyed seeing both art exhibitions. In my opinion, they represent the importance that we place on images nowadays, compared to words".
María Ocaña is studying the Master in Human Resources in the weekend format and this was her first at the ABC Museum. María added that "I had no idea it existed, even though I am from Madrid, so I found it really interesting to find out about its relationship with our country's literature and history".
The ABC Museum of Drawing and Illustration was founded by José López Salaberry, an architect linked to the development of Madrid's urban renovation at the start of the 20th Century. Salaberry oversaw the relocation from La Cibeles to its current site and he was also one of the architects behind the Gran Vía. It was precisely this historical and artistic aspect that attracted Sam Henry, an Indian student on the Master in Marketing. "I have always had links to the world of art ever since I was a child thanks to my family. In fact, my sister is an artist in my country, so I didn't hesitate to visit the ABC Museum because it gives me the chance to get to know the art of Madrid a little better".
A great source of pride for the ABC Museum is its bookshop with a large children's section and workshops for kids. Natali Córdoba, a Peruvian student the Master in Supply Chain Management & Logistics, was keen to look around this museum. She signed up on the waiting list and was lucky enough to come on the visit. She says that it was well worth it as "I really liked the fact that the museum has lots of activities for kids to develop their emotional intelligence away from school".
