At the museum, students had the chance to see the permanent collection and a temporary exhibition entitled Lucien Clergue: Twenty-Seven Meetings with Picasso which, until April, displays the photographs of the artist taken by Lucien Clergue at various times throughout his life. The affection and understanding between the two artists gave rise to a photographic record of small episodes of Picasso's life, portraying scenes that took place through time and which would eventually grow into a narrative of part of the artist's existence through the lens of his friend the photographer. Last year, the Picasso Museum in Barcelona purchased Lucien Clergue's entire photographic collection related to the painter, amounting to almost 600 black and white photographs.
The students enjoyed the visit, such as Vanesa Miní, a student on the Master in Human Resources Management. "The artist's work is really interesting. I have been on other cultural visits organized by EAE, such as the Maritime Museum, the Sagrada Familia, the Palau Güell, etc. These visits are great for getting to know the culture of Barcelona and, as they are all guided tours, you get a detailed insight into each thing". With respect to her Master, Vanesa emphasized the theoretical and practical aspects, "with cases applied to day-to-day situations". She is currently deciding what to do when she finishes her studies here.
The Barcelona Picasso Museum's permanent collection is extensive. It spans the different artistic periods of the painter and his relationships with women and other artists of the time. In total, the collection includes 4,251 artworks, connecting Barcelona with the Malaga-born artist, who lived and trained as a painter in the Catalan capital. Most of the paintings on display at the museum come from the period between 1890 and 1917.
The guided tour of the Picasso Museum took students through the artist's different periods, such as his blue phase, and his most optimistic works, encompassed in his pink period. Also on display are the authentic paintings of the menu of the Els 4 Gats restaurant in Barcelona, where Picasso organized his first exhibition when he was living in the city.
Jorge Madrid, a student on EAE's MBA, decided to go on this cultural visit because he knows a little about the artist's life and work. He described the visit as "a valuable experience". Jorge explained that he knows about Picasso's most famous masterpieces. "It is interesting to see how his work changed through time, the various nuances and colours that he applied through the years. Thanks to EAE, I have also had the chance to discover other parts of the city, such as Medieval and Gothic Barcelona". In Jorge's opinion, the MBA that he is taking covers a diverse range of topics, and the part he is most interested in is the area of entrepreneurship and improving work in high-performing teams. "The topics are extremely good", he added.
Meanwhile, Luisa Quintero, a student on the Master in Marketing and Commercial Management, explained that the museum is one of the city's most important and visited. "So far, I have not had the chance to see the artist's work, but I hope to find out a lot more about him on this tour". Luisa is very happy to be living in Barcelona. "I hope to find a good employment opportunity here. If not, I will go back to my country and take full advantage of everything I have learned here".
The museum also boasts key artworks from the Cubist movement, such as the painting El Arlequín (The Harlequin), which Picasso himself donated to the centre. Moreover, the rooms of the museum are home to many pottery masterpieces related to bullfighting.
