What is a bank? What risks do they involve? These questions were addressed by experts from the banking institution Liberbank, Luis Suárez and Alberto Bendayán, in a session entitled ‘Structural Risk Management in Credit Institutions’, which focused on different issues and concepts related to banking risks and strategies to tackle them. Held within the framework of EAE’s Business Networking program, the talk took place on 23rd January at the School’s Joaquín Costa Campus in Madrid, organized by the Madrid Service Department.
With over 40 participants, including students and teachers, the EAE lecturers Sofía Ruiz and Francisco Pérez introduced Luis Suárez, the Planning and ALM Director at Liberbank, and Alberto Bendayán, the Director of Balance and Margins at the same company. The specialists gave an interesting talk on the various kinds of banking risks, such as liquidity risk and interest rate risk.
Firstly, Luis Suárez focused on the issue of liquidity and analysed liquidity risk and the different liquidity strategies that banking institutions apply around the world. Bendayán then examined the interest rate risk and explained that the types of risk vary depending on the country in which the banking institution or company is operating. With the help of audiovisual material, the speakers gave a masterclass that led to an enthusiastic discussion.
Around 11 o’clock in the morning, the speakers brought the talk to a close, concluding that “These risks are not independent from each other. They are completely interrelated. At the end of the day, it is all a balancing act”. Afterward, the EAE lecturers Sofía Ruiz and Francisco Pérez open the floor to questions and the students took the opportunity to clear up doubts and express their points of view.
In Bendayán’s opinion, “this type of talk is important because they give students a more practical insight into the day-to-day side of business. You need to know the theory, but the practical side of things has to be a key feature as well”. Suárez added that “EAE strives to link classes with practical management with the help of great professionals”. We couldn’t agree more!
