Having a well-defined professional path mapped out ahead of you is one of the top ways of achieving success and the best way for sketching out this map is through experiences that, right from the start, enable you to hone your skills and discover your qualities. Marta García Caberol, a student in EAE’s Bachelor Degree of Marketing and Digital Communication, understands this very well and, with this in mind, since she was 20 years old, she has focused on building her own professional path by doing internships in energy companies like Becquel.
We talked to Marta to find out about her experience at Becquel and her time at EAE. Here is what she told us.
Marta, how are you? Imagine that you are in a job interview. How would you introduce yourself?
Good morning, I am Marta Garcia, I am 20 years old and I am just about to start the third year of my degree in Marketing and Digital Communication at EAE in Barcelona.
I decided to move to Barcelona to take this university Bachelor Degree because, ever since I was a child, I have been interested in business and particularly in the digital field that can boost growth so much.
I would describe myself as very ambitious and always ready to give it my all. My interests have been the same since I was very young, above all, the environment and my hobby, horses. In the future, I would like to be able to combine these passions and develop my professional career towards these areas.
With respect to work, we know that you did an internship at Becquel. Tell us about the company and the tasks you performed?
The company Becquel primarily specializes in engineering and the installation of solar panels and charging points for electric vehicles. In just two years, the company has installed almost 4,000 kW across Catalonia and Aragon. At the moment, it is in the middle of a solar power project with over 1,000 units in a Catalan hospital.
I am fascinated by the company’s social commitment social and its drive to keep growing. In fact, before I finished the internship, they were just about to launch maintenance packages for photovoltaic installations at both a residential and industrial levels. They just keep on innovating and reinventing themselves, which is why I decided to go for a company of this kind for my internship, They are keenly aware that marketing is essential if they want to expand, and they always treated me as just another member of the team.
My duties at the company were mainly related to its social media, for which I created daily content (Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook), creating distribution lists and newsletters (with platforms like Mailchimp), generally improving and reviewing the SEO of its website and posts for its renewable energy blog, and last but not least, documenting and publishing the solar power projects undertaken (doing everything from going to the installation to talk to the owners to drafting a final report to record the project).
Tell us about you studies on EAE’s Bachelor Degree in Marketing and Digital Communication. How have they helped you during this professional experience?
On the curricular internship, I have really learned lots of new things. In particular, I have seen how the professional field that I want to specialize in works. Thanks to my studies at EAE, I have been able to help the company in terms of new developments and SEO tricks that they may not have been fully up to date with. Most importantly, I have been able to apply all my theoretical knowledge in a real company and see the results.
What has the experience of taking the Bachelor Degree been like? What aspects have you liked most?
In fact, I am still taking the Bachelor Degree. In September, I am starting the third year and, although the situation we are all living through is very strange, I are still keen to keep learning and seeing where my studies take me.
What skills do you think a digital marketing professional needs? Hoe does your Bachelor Degree at EAE tackle and strengthen these skills?
I think that digital marketing professionals have to keep training constantly because it is a profession in which new developments emerge every day. In my opinion, EAE understands this fact fully, as the topics on the syllabus are updated every year. Moreover, I also think that it is really interesting to be able to learn about all the branches of marketing, including the social side and statistics, rather than focusing on one specific aspect.
Tell us a little more about your internship. How did you get it? What did you find most interesting and the most challenging?
I got the internship because my family had used the company for a number of photovoltaic installations and electric charging points, so I decided to talk to them to see if they were interested in taking on an intern, as they also have a marketing department.
In my opinion, the most interesting part was putting lots of my theoretical knowledge into practice. In addition, as I have always been interested in the issue of climate change, the opportunity to work in a company with the level of social commitment they have has made me even more aware of the climate emergency that we are facing, and how important it is to focus on these challenges.
Employability is one of the key founding pillars of EAE. Do you feel that the School prepares you to succeed in the professional world? How?
I feel that the School is very innovative and, although I found my internship completely on my own, they prepare us to make our own contribution and to strive to achieve our goals. They also give you access to a great network of contacts that we can capitalize on in the future.
Now that you have finished this experience at Becquel, what is your next goal?
My next goal is to take the third year of the degree and take part in the Erasmus program in the fourth year. Then, I will see which area I want to specialize in. One thing I am sure of is that I will look for options abroad.
EAE offers a range of employability services and events. Which of these would you highlight?
I make use of the Highered News resource, which keeps you informed of new jobs. It is a really interesting alternative.
Where do you see yourself after completing your Bachelor Degree?
I plan to move abroad and continue my education. In fact, I already have a few countries in mind.
If you had to send a message to young people looking for or just starting an internship, what would you say?
I would tell them to find a company that does something that really interests them and to enjoy the internship because they can learn a great deal.
