EAE Business School (www.eae.es) has presented its report entitled Sectors in expansion: the pet market in Europe and Spain, which reveals that the revenue generated by animal healthcare and nutrition products in Spain was 1.35 billion euros in 2016. Of this total, dog and cat food accounts for 70% of the market, followed by veterinary expenses. In Spain, there are a total of 16 million pets, meaning that one out of every two houses has a pet.
In Spain, average annual spending per household on dogs is €130, while for cats the figure is €91, according to the survey conducted by EAE, which goes on to specify that the monthly spending on pet food is from 16 to 20 euros for 40.8% of the pet owners surveyed, while 24.8% report spending less than 15 euros and 22.4% spend between 21 and 30 euros. Just 12% say that they spend more than 30 euros per month on feeding their pet. This figure represents 60% of the market share.
For their part, Spanish veterinary clinics saw a 7.4% increase in revenue in 2016 and consolidated their growth for the third year in a row, beating the figures recorded in 2014 and 2015 to reach 225 million euros. In total, in Spain, there are around 5,000 specialist stores and approximately 6,000 veterinary clinics.
There is a trend in this sector towards a greater number of smaller dogs, as a result of the pace of urban life, which makes it difficult to care for larger dogs and low birth rates. Another market trend is that it is increasingly easy to find pet foods that are gluten-free, ecological, dietary specific and 100% natural. Moreover, the online channel is gaining strength and now accounts for 7% of total expenditure in this category in Spain.
This sector generates a revenue of nearly 30 trillion euros per year for the European. In Europe, average spending on dogs and cats per household is €271 per year, which is higher than in Spain. Therefore, the pet market (veterinary services, toys, food and medication) generates practically 25 billion euros, of which 9 billion euros comes from the total sales of pet foods and accessories in Europe. By countries, this total breaks down as follows: United Kingdom at 2.425, ahead of Germany and France, at 2.114 and 2.075 respectively, followed by Italy (1.272), Spain (583) and the Netherlands, at 306 million euros.
In this respect, the market for pet care, food and leisure represents a significant economic activity within the EU, creating 780,000 jobs directly and indirectly, including veterinary services, pet carers and supply industries.
